How to kill bed bugs

Preparation for the treatment of bed bugs

Bed bugs have oval flattened bodies, wingless and measure 4-7 mm long. They are a shiny brown colored insect. They swell after a blood meal and then take a dark brown color. There are three stages in the development cycle of a flea: egg, nymph and adult. The eggs are white and about 1 mm long. The nymphs look the same as adults, but are smaller. The last stage takes six weeks to several months to happen. The bug is usually found in the bedroom where it feeds on the sleepers’ blood at night.

Bed bugs

Biology Bed bugs feed on human blood: The most common species is the common bed bug (Cimex Mlectularius). They are a serious nuisance and abundantly present.

Bed bugs

A blood meal takes 10 to 15 minutes for the adult bedbug, but less time for the nymph. During the day, the bug lies mainly on the periphery of the mattress. Depending on the degree of the infestation, it is also found hidden in cracks on the walls, floors and furnitures, in bed frames, behind pictures and under the wallpaper, hiding places also serve as breeding sites.

A temperature of 44oC to 45oC (111oF – 113oF) is lethal to these bugs. Their survival time is assessed to about 20 minutes when the temperature is 65oC.

Adults can survive more than a year without getting any blood.

Dispersion

Bed bugs
Bed bugs

The bug does not get far from its host if it can eat from them regularly. If the infestation is heavy, they can migrate to other rooms. The absence of prey leads to a dispersion of the bug. Thus, when the bugs are present in a room where the people sleep regularly, they tend to stay put. Be careful because if you remove them from the room, the bugs will be dispersed throughout the house or even elsewhere in the building. If this is not the case, they move from one room to another while walking on the ground. Removal or displacement of articles already infested (furniture, bedding, clothing, suitcases, etc..) From an inhabited place to another is the main mode of spread of bedbugs.

Importance for your health

Table 1 summarizes the main effects on the skin (and other more rare cases) associated with bedbug bites. The lesions are similar to those occasioned by a mosquito bite. Typically, bedbug bites appear as three to four bites in a straight line or grouped in one place on the skin, but if the house is seriously infested, several lesions may appear in multiple places on exposed skin when sleeping.

For most people, the bites will result in the formation of small reddish lesions that develop into elevated and hardened lesions. There is frequently a central puncture site of inoculation. These lesions cause severe itching, therefore, they are very troublesome. These lesions are more symptomatic in the morning and the intensity of redness and pruritus (itching) decreases during the day. The lesions occur mainly on exposed arms, legs and back. If the person is not stung again, the lesions disappear after two weeks.

Effects much less frequent but more serious may occur such as nettlerash and giant bulbous eruption that may be hemorrhagic. Children with atopy (allergies) are more likely to develop papular urticaria. Finally, anaphylactic reactions have rarely been documented (see Table 1 for a brief description of these effects on health).

In another words, secondary bacterial infections can occur from recurrent scratching from itching. However, this case is rare.

Table 1. Summary of skin problems associated with bedbugs

Type of problem Brief Description Frequency
Wheal A smooth, slightly elevated, more reddish or pale skin surrounding the associated itching and usually transient. Following each bite
Nettlerash Rapid swelling of the skin with severe itching. Rare
Bulbous eruptions sometimes bleeding Similar to the bells on the skin, sometimes filled with blood. Rare
Papular urticaria Presence of papules 3 to 10 mm, sometimes surmounted by a vesicle that is more persistent than the wheals or typical nettlerash. These lesions can last from several weeks to several months. They are generally clustered and occur more often in young children. We can find these lesions on exposed parts. Rare

No research has focused on the impact of an infestation by bugs on mental health and sleep. However, some references indicate that repeated bug bites could cause insomnia and anxiety.

Although at one time bug bites were suspected of transmitting viral hepatitis, or to develop anemia caused by multiple stings, so far, no proof of disease transmission by bugs or development of anemia has been documented.

Improper application of insecticides on mattresses to eliminate bugs can have important effects on health, particularly towards children. This practice is therefore to be avoided (see next section).

Control Measures

When the presence of bedbugs is suspected, it is strongly advised to call a professional to ensure that they are located correctly and that the various control methods (including the use of insecticides in some areas) are adequately made according to the standards. exterminators must first ensure that the right product is used and that insecticides are not spread over the beds of people. The exterminator is coming every month out of two in order to kill the bugs that will hatch despite the first use of insecticide. Several steps must be taken by the occupant during the process of extermination. These measures are explained to tenants by the firm responsible of the extermination.

Locating the insects

The infestation can be confirmed by the discovery (in the potential hiding places of bedbugs) of live insects, exuviae, eggs or faeces. These can be visible as small dark brown or black spots on the sheets, walls and wallpaper, and sometimes even in electrical appliances.

Control Methods

1. Physical Barriers

Simple barriers may be used. A barrier can be made by coating the legs of the bed with a few inches of petroleum jelly (Vaseline).

However, it should ensure that no part of the bed touches a wall that would provide an alternative access to the bed.

2. Cleaning by vacuum

Vacuuming is a very effective way to remove bugs already present. It is recommended to vacuum the mattress and box springs particularly where the seams, folds and structures are in the infested beds. If the outer envelope of the mattress is torn, bed bugs may have seeped inside it. If so, you may be obliged to dispose of the mattress, in this case, it is very important to clearly indicate that the mattress is infested so as not to shift the problem elsewhere. You should also vacuum the floor and where it is suspected that the bugs are hiding. Be sure to get rid of the vacuum bag immediately, without opening it, in a place where bugs can’t disperse again.

Used furniture should always be carefully inspected and cleaned before being used. Bedbugs are easily dispersed through the exchange of furniture or clothes.

3. Cleaning the bedding

Bedding (pillowcases, sheets, mattress covers, etc.) and linen should be washed with hot water and soap. The bedding should be placed directly into the washer from a plastic bag to prevent the spread of bedbugs in the laundry room and around the building.

4. Use of insecticides

We recall that it is always advisable to hire a professional exterminator to treat your home with insecticides. It will use a registered insecticide while respecting the recommendations designed to minimize the risks associated with the use of these products. Among the effective insecticides, it is preferable to use pyrethrins, pyrethroids and boric acid, as these products have a lower toxicity to humans than many other types of insecticides. People should avoid to do the extermination themselves, since the bugs are often resistant to the product used. If the product is misused, it will aggravate the problem rather than decrease it. Moreover, it is strongly recommended to use hot steam for the treatment of the mattress which are favorite places for bugs. This technique is effective and can significantly reduce children’s exposure to insecticides.

Pyrethrins and pyrethroids are sprayed everywhere we can find bedbugs, or along cracks in the walls, floor and furniture, bed frames, behind pictures and under the wallpaper. You must ventilate the area after the application of insecticides. Neither people nor animals should enter the rooms during the application of treatment or re-enter treated areas within two hours after treatment, and preferably six hours after treatment. It is also important to not walk barefoot on treated areas until 24-48 hours.

Boric acid is applied along the cracks in walls, floors, behind furniture and under the wallpaper that generally have bedbugs.

The insecticides do not work on the eggs. We must therefore repeat the treatment a month after applying the first treatment to ensure that the problem is eliminated.

Identification

Bed bugs
Bed bugs

Adults: 5-8 mm
Nymphs: 1-5 mm

Antennas: 4 segments

The color varies from a pale yellow to a brownish red depending on the stage of development and blood ingested.

/ Signs of infestation

  • Bites
  • Bloodstains on the sheets or pillows
  • Faeces (black spots)
  • Exuviae (empty skin left behind after moulting)
  • Adults and nymphs
  • eggs (white)
  • A peculiar smell musty or moldy (infestations)

Biology

Bed bugs
Eggs Bed bugs

Egg production:

  • 1 to 5 eggs per day per adult female
  • Up to 500 eggs per female in his life
  • The eggs are attached by a sticky secretion
  • 6 to 10 days to hatch

Life cycle

  • from egg to adult: 21 days at 30 ° C and 120 days at 16 ° C (relative humidity 75-80%)
  • 5 nymphal stages requiring a blood meal and a moulting to the next stage
  • Life expectancy under normal conditions: 316 days
  • 3 to 4 generations per year

Development Factors

  • Minimum temperature for development: 13 ° C
  • Lethal temperatures: Low: -16 ° C constant for 4 days. High: 50 ° C for 3 hours.
  • Much prefer human blood but merely a warm-blooded animal.
  • Their meals take 3 to 12 minutes.
  • Under certain conditions, adult bed bugs can survive a year without feeding.

Habits

  • Bedbugs move into the bags, luggage, furniture and other objects and are carried by people.
  • Once introduced, they are often spread throughout the building.
  • They tend to move as close as possible to their food source.
  • They can move anywhere when the population increases.
  • When disturbed or hunted, they hide anywhere.
  • They gather in groups in their hiding places where they lay eggs, defecate and moult.
  • The bugs come out at night but could be active by day if the food is not available at night or during a severe infestation.
  • Bedbugs are attracted by carbon dioxide, heat and body odor.
  • We generally observed that when given a choice, prefer to bite children first, then women and men as a last choice.
  • Bedbugs prefer a dry, semi obscure, tissues or uneven surfaces.
  • Its preference is for wood surfaces, paper and tissues.
  • Bedbugs disdain drafts, polished surfaces and metal objects, but they can still navigate.
  • They do not like the movement.
  • After treatment, if no bite or no evidence of the presence of bugs is found in a period of 45 days, the problem is almost certainly set. If there is occurrence of bugs or bites after a period of 45 days without activity, bedbugs have very likely been reintroduced.

Factors of the bedbugs’ resurgence in the world

  • Although nearly exterminated in North America after World War II, bedbugs have remained widespread in Asia, Africa, Central and South America and Europe.
  • Bugs naturally settle in the bags, luggage, furniture and other objects and are carried by the millions of visitors and tourists.
  • The more targeted use of insecticides and bait traps for several years has given free rein to bugs.
  • The recall of several insecticides that were effective against bedbugs and other restrictions on the use of insecticides.
  • Lack of knowledge of our own health and of the population in general helped to disperse the bugs before making a diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Health risk

  • Although bugs can sometimes carry human pathogens, no study could prove they also transmit it. For this reason, Health Canada does not consider it a public health problem. We believe that this could change.
  • Lack of sleep
  • Infections of the wounds if you scratch
  • Isolation or psychological problems
  • Repeated exposure to insecticides if multiple treatments are inconclusive
  • Respiratory problems due to exuviae’s particles of bugs that are found in the air.

Bite Reaction

Bed bugs
Bite of Bed bugs
  • Reactions can vary greatly from one person to another depending on his degree of sensitivity
  • Normally, small red swelling appears because of an allergy some people have. It is a reaction to the saliva injected by the bug
  • 30% of the population have no reaction after being stung
  • The reaction can occur up to 2 weeks after the bite

Working with your landlord and / or manager of property is desirable and even crucial to overcome the infestation. It will be important to contact him to get a date for the treatment.

Talk with him to know how all the stages of the preparation are going before the treatment. Listed below are the recommendations that will help you prepare the affected areas of your home for the treatment.

  • Empty the closets, drawers, desks. Place bedding and clothing in plastic bags, close them and take them out of the room. Make sure all bags are securely closed before moving from one room to another.
  • Wash bedding and clothing in the hottest water possible, then dry them at the highest temperature. Replace all bedding and clothing in new plastic bags and close them again.
  • All carpets, handmade carpets, upholstery and imported fabrics require steam cleaning and / or professional dry cleaning.
  • Throw away unnecessary clutter and remove any objects lying on the floor. Wash all floors, desks, drawers, closets housing before treatment.
  • Use a vacuum cleaner with a crevice tool to capture bed bugs and eggs. Vacuum crevices of the mattress on the bed frame, box spring, headboard, bed legs, baseboards, quarter round, trim and all the objects that are near the bed. Repeat the same process in all parts of the house. Make sure the vacuum has a bag that can be removed after each use. Avoid using bag-less vacuums. Vacuum every day after the application of insecticide and remove the bag after each use.
  • 24 hours after treatment, you can put the lingerie and clothing in the desks, dressers, drawers, closets and night stands. Do not wash the insecticide for at least 30 days or 90 days, for best results.

No animals, fish, reptile or bird should be in contact with the workpiece infected for at least 30 days after application of the insecticide.

When the treatment is done, particularly when the mattress and pillows have been treated, we recommend closing the door of the room in question and preferably wait at least 24 hours before returning to sleep, especially if it’s a child’s room. Although low toxicity pesticides are recommended, you should still respect the delay to reduce the risk of exposure and particularly for those who are more sensitive. Once the delay is over, it is necessary to ensure proper ventilation of the room, ideally, by opening the window for some time. After making sure the mattress is dry, you will then have to put a mattress cover in plastic with a zipper, clean sheets and pillowcases before going to bed again.

If the mattress, box springs, futons, sofa beds and chairs have cracks and / or holes, they must be put in the trash. You will have to make sure it is respecting the environment and public health.

HYPNOS BEDS MATTRESS
Hypnos has years of success behind the family-run company and has been producing handmade beds for over four generations – beds that have given countless nights of comfortable sleep to many thousands of people. Proud holders of two Royal Warrants, the Hypnos philosophy of quality and comfort is maintained throughout their product range. The Chairman, Peter Keen is the great grandson of the original founder and the product has been hand-crafted using traditional methods from the very first day of existence.

Handmade BedsDeep pocket-spring beds are the trademark of Hypnos, elegant handmade beds which are still produced by craftsmen, many of whom have worked at Hypnos since their apprenticeship and who all take a great personal pride in the skilled work that goes into producing each Hypnos bed. The skills used by these craftsmen have been handed down through generations and the art of making a quality bed lives on from father to son, mother to daughter, through Hypnos.

Hypnos beds are still made in a similar way to those slept on by our fathers and grandfathers. Every detail on a Hypnos bed is considered from the natural fillings in the mattresses, to the specially balanced springs in the Royal box, to the expertly cut high quality Belgium damask cloths, to the selected soft and hard woods, to the fine handmade wool tufts. Considered, tried and tested producing the ultimate in comfort, quality and craftsmanship.

Choosing a bed is a very personal decision and one not to be undertaken lightly. When you consider that up to a third of your life will be spent in bed, it only makes sense to spend that time in Royal Comfort. At Hypnos, we make that perfect bed to suit your specific needs, for a supportive and restful nights sleep.

History of the Royal Warrant

Queen Elizabeth II

Queen Elizabeth II

To be a Warrant holder you must first supply the Royal Household with unrivalled quality products or services for five consecutive years. The Lord Chamberlain (head of the Royal households) advises the grantors on the granting of Royal Warrants but the final decision rests with the grantor concerned. Thereafter the Warrant is reviewed every five years. Hypnos has been handcrafting the finest bespoke mattresses for two Royal Warrant holders. Queen Elizabeth II and The Late Queen Mother.

To this day only the finest quality products are associated with the Royal Warrants and Hypnos is extremely proud to have carried the Royal Warrants of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and The Late Queen Mother for over 37 years. To be honoured by two Royal Households is unprecedented. Other Royal Warrant holders include; Rolls Royce & Bentley Motorcars, Dunlop, Aston Martin, Burberry Limited, Royal Doulton, Jaguar Motorcars, Austin Reed Group PLC, Steinway & Sons and Land Rover & Range Rover.

Hypnos Mattress Benefit Information

Handcrafting – Hypnos is the only truly handcrafted mattress in Canada.

Genuine Side Stitching: The borders of Hypnos mattress are expertly sewn through the sides to the coil system. This is a very time consuming process but the end results are well worth while. This procedure makes a Hypnos mattress the most structurally sound mattress available in Canada.

Hand Tufting: Unlike other tufted looking mattresses in Canada, Hypnos tufts go through the entire body of the mattress. This means the tuft you see on the top is connected to the one on the bottom. Adding another layer of structural integrity and helping the natural fills stay in place.

Matching Fabric Trim: Most mattresses use a very hard pre-fabricated tape edge to give a finish to the corner. Hypnos uses the same fabric as the body of the bed. This means a very soft and luxurious finish even to the edges.

Pure Brass: many other companies put brass coated finishes on their products so they will look elegant. Only Hypnos uses solid brass plates and vents for strength and longevity of life.

Natural Fill – Hypnos uses only the finest of natural fills

Cotton and Wool are strategically placed and combined for complete climate control. Warmth in the winter and cool in the summer.

Silk and Wool let you feel like you are floating on a cloud, most say a feeling like you have never had with a mattress.

Teased White Hair and Cashmere is a unique blend of Cattle, Hog tail and Cashmere that is designed to keep its shape even after many years of service. This blend of hair is heat treated to be completely clean, then bonded to give the long life shape retention.

Belgium Damask is not only luxurious looking but the one of the most tightly woven upholstery materials available to the bedding industry and is custom made just for Hypnos.

Body Support – Unique pocket coil design for true complete body support

Coil Counts: most pocket coil systems in Canada have about 500 to 800 coils in a queen size mattress. Hypnos starts over 1,000 coils and goes to over 2,000 individual pocket coils. Some other companies claim coil counts of this amount, however they typically stack coils on top of coils to accomplish this. Hypnos only uses individually wrapped full height coil for complete and perfect body forming support.

Honey Combing: Hypnos is one of the few companies that honeycomb (nest) their pocket coils together virtually eliminating the gaps between coils. This give you maximum body support no matter how you lay or how small an area you need supported.

Centre Tying: most coil manufactures connect their pocket coils together at the top in one form or another. Even the coil is still independent as one coil moves it moves the one beside it. Hypnos runs treads through the middle of its coil system allowing the tops to totally work independently of each other, again giving you perfect body support for every little curve.

Firmness

Firmness vs Support: Often firmness and support are confused. Medical research has shown that it is proper support, not firmness, that cares for your muscle aches and pains. Further proper support will keep your spinal column in a straight line, in turn giving you a good nights sleep and physical well being. Hypnos’ unique coil structure is designed with this in mind. It will give you the support and comfort you need, for a good nights sleep and keep those morning aches away.

Firmness: Hypnos further offers their coils in different firmness’. This is so no matter what your body build is, there is a Hypnos mattress for you.

Dust Mite Control

Belgium Damask: The average person loses 11 pounds of skin per year. Our extremely tight woven Belgium Damask almost eliminates the dead skin from penetrating into the bed. Without this dead skin Dust Mites do not have the food they need to survive.

Natural Fills: Our unique combination of natural materials produces an enviroment that Dust Mites do not like and works as a natural Dust Mite inhibitor.

Moisture Control: It is a very well know fact that Dust Mites thrive in a moist warm setting. Hypnos mattresses are designed to breath, keeping them clean and dry inside for years and in turn eliminating a Dust Mites prefered residence.

Mold & Mildew Control

Natural Fills: Most mattresses in Canada use a combinations of different types of foams. Some are even completely foam. The average person loses about 1 cup of moisture each evening. This inevitably moves into your mattress. Foam is like a big sponge which absorbs and holds that moisture. Mold and mildew quickly builds up and creates an unhealthy sleeping environment. Natural fills breath taking that moisture from you.

Brass Airvents: After the Natural fills move the moisture way from you. As you move around the bed the individual coils push that moisture out the brass airvents. In a nutshell your bed breaths like no other so it can stay clean and healthy for a long time.

Asthma friendly

NO FOAMS: With no foams, Hypnos mattresses do not give off that petroleum gas that other mattresses do. Right from day one, foams start breaking down giving off a gas that can seriously effect the breathing of sensitive individuals. Further one of memory foams natural properties is to trap heat. They are often found to be too warm and uncomfortable.

Other Gases: Dust mites themselves do not really harm us. However the gas emitted from their faescies can become a serious issue. With Hypnos’ natural Dust Mite control this problem is minimized.

Effects from Mold & Mildew: Many asthmatics are extremely sensitive to Molds and Mildew. Because Hypnos mattresses stray extremely clean inside with its natural breathing, making it the cleanest mattress in Canada.

Common Questions and Answers

Q: Does Hypnos use Horse Hair?

A: Hypnos knows many people are allergic to Horse and this is why we use a combination of Cattle and Hog tail that has been sanitized.

Q: Does a Hypnos mattress need to be flipped?

A: Yes, especially because it is all natural it is important to flip and rotate the mattress as per the Care instructions. This will let the mattress provide you with a long and comfortable life.

Q: Is the Damask a natural material?

A: Yes, the Damask is made from natural Rayon, derived from wood pulp.

Q: Since there is no foam will the bed show body impressions?

A: Hypnos takes many steps to reduce the occurrence of body impresses. First they over fill the entire mattress then during the Tufting process pre pack the fills to the finished size you see. Next the tufts help keep the fills from moving around and leaving sagged areas. Last the unique combination of fills helps to keep everything the way they should be.

Q: Can you sleep on the edges?

A: Unlike other mattresses we do not have any solid foams and block on the edges on the mattress. However we do have butterfly edge supports and an edge to edge coil system. You should be able to comfortably sleep on the edges. You many feel a slight rolling at the beginning however this is subside in a short period as the fills settle.

Q: What are the different sizes of mattresses?

A: Hypnos makes its mattresses in 3 standard sizes, King, Queen and Single XL. Hypnos can also make custom sizes, including Doubles. Please call your local retailer for more information.

MATTRESS CONSULTING for Deep Sleep

Linear and Lateral Support

1. Linear Support

By linear support, we understand the support that makes that your body does not sag. In an undistorted by hanging du hard to top a mattress lying still..

In a side-lying posture, the back shall form one straight line, from the neck vertebrae to the sacrum. In a side/belly posture, the spinal column shall remain in its natural bended form, from the neck to the sacrum, as in an upright posture. Thighbones and knees shall sink a little bit deeper in the mattress, so as not to cause too large a pressure on the lower back. When sleeping on the back, the spinal column has to keep its natural bended form from the neck to the sacrum. It is important that the lumbar region is supported sufficiently. In all recumbent postures, an orthopaedically justified support is necessary. The position of the spinal column at night may in no event obstruct the hormonal flows. I hereby refer to the sacro-cranial therapies.

MATTRESS CONSULTINGMATTRESS CONSULTING

In addition, the dorsal vertebrae must be able to arrange themselves at night so that the intervertebral disks can regenerate optimally. At the same time, the neck and dorsal muscles that are during the daytime most of the time contorted because of an incorrect sitting position must be given a chance to relax. But, the human body is not a plank. Normally, our shoulders are broader than our hips; but at the hips, we have more weight than at the shoulders.

So, it is clear that the ideal bed for a dominant side sleeper is softer at shoulders’ height and harder at hips’ height. Hard mattresses are a real disaster in terms of support, one really completely tenses up on such mattresses.

« Fabeltje te harde matras »

The double bed is an invention of the devil who was jealous of the blessings of marriage.
Marie Stopes,
Sleep, Chatto and Winders, Londen 1956.

Even light persons have to impress their shoulders sufficiently so that the pillow, when used, does not have to carry the weight of the shoulders through the neck.

Orthopaedic pillows on too hard beds shift the problem from the shoulders to the neck. Neck muscles get overloaded and the pressure on the head is much too large. Especially for back-sore people, the mattress has to make it possible that the distance between the shoulder tip and the lumbar region can be impressed by the shoulder. This implies that, independent of the person’s weight, the mattress can at shoulders’ height be impressed 6 to 9 cm, whereas at the hips, that generally weigh more, the mattress cannot be impressed that much. Most certainly for low-back-pain patients and slipped-disk patients, no pressure may be exercised on the lower intervertebral disks. Therefore, in order to offer a perfect linear support, the mattress shall be very elastic without becoming deformed. It shall also have a softer shoulder zone and a slightly harder hip zone, as well as a softer knee zone, if so desired.

The base on which the mattress is lying, shall allow the same support and impression, though in an accentuated way. The ideal bed is as large as possible, and allows you to optimally stretch out both lengthwise and breadthwise, it allows you to make yourselves as large and as broad as you wish without being hindered by a bed head end, a foot bed end or your partner. For side/belly and belly sleepers, the bed is at least 30 cm and preferably 50 cm longer than the person in question! It must be possible to maximally stretch out the spinal column and to have your body heave on the mattress. This ensures a perfect lateral support.

green sleep sleep well

2. Lateral Support

The secret of the ideal bed not only lies in a perfect support, but also in an optimal pressure-reducing contact plane between the body and the mattress. The larger the contact zone between the body and the mattress, the smaller the pressure registration per square centimeter of skin. The larger the contact zone, the longer it will take before the body subconsciously orders to turn over and before large tension build-up in the skeleton muscles can interrupt your deep sleep or REM sleep. Sleep quality indeed is reduced drastically when you are wakened by an internal pain impulse caused by overpressure or by difficulties when turning over. The longer you can stay in the same position without suffering pressure damage, the longer your muscles can deacidify. In addition, reduced pressure also stimulates the blood circulation in the limbs. But, a larger contact plane also implies that the mattress should ventilate perfectly. The skin that touches the mattress also must be able to breathe and the purifying perspiration must be absorbed without the mattress feeling moist to the touch. Therefore, when falling asleep, the perfect lateral support is obtained by giving the body as large a contact plane as possible and by having the body heave maximally on the mattress. So, in this scope, stretching out and as large a mattress as possible are extremely important.

Back schools give advice on how to turn your dominant recumbent posture in a better equilibrium posture, so that you do not have to turn over too quickly. In all events, when falling asleep, one should lie as relaxed as possible, with as large a contact plane as possible. The ideal bed can help you a lot.

SLEEP WELL

SLEEP WELL

1. « Four out of ten Belgians sleep badly«

Source: Het Nieuwsblad 5-10-2004
Why do we actually still sleep? Of all primates, the human being already sleeps least. Did, a century ago, Thomas Edison not contend that with the invention of electricity and artificial light, sleeping in fact becomes unnecessary? Indeed, having to go to sleep because it is too dark to go out hunting safely or to gather food, today for most people belongs to the past.

In fact, artificial light makes it possible to have factories work day and night in 3 shifts, to have shops open 24 hours a day, to have a dazzling nightlife and even to do all kinds of interesting things at home at night and not to have to sleep. Indeed, why do we actually still sleep?

Why do we “lose” 1/3 of our lives to something that is like “being death”?
Do we really enjoy that so much?

Chronic short-sleepers Napoleon Bonaparte was on the alert day and night, and thus suffered from a chronic sleep deficiency. He only slept short sleeps, never exceeding a few hours. Thomas Edison invented artificial light and thought sleeping was “a deplorable regression to the primitive conduct of cavemen.” Albert Einstein was a frequent sleeper, both during the night and by day, he regularly doze off. He pretended that it contributed to his creativity.

2. Evolution history

SLEEP WELLNevertheless, there is something that forces us to sleep. Is it the tiredness of our muscles and mind that creates the need for sleep? Or do our genes in a circadian 24 hours rhythm order us to go to sleep right now? Science has no straightforward answer yet.

As Homo Sapiens we have had a long evolution history. Today we still have the body of the hunter-gatherer, including the coccyx. From a long time before the first Homo Habilis until recently, the human being was extremely vulnerable when it grew dark.
He lived solitarily or in group, but had to remain observant at all times. When he slept, he hided and protected himself as much as possible in caves or on higher places where the entrance or entry could be watched over. As our ancestors were occupied with keeping up a fire, watching and other survival activities, they subconsciously felt it was not permitted to sleep through for several hours a day. Their nights were interrupted several times by active moments. Today, primitive population groups still sleep several successive short sleeps at night. By organizing themselves into groups and hierarchies, the night watch could be reduced to a restricted group and the others could slowly evolve into the modern social sleep, in which the shorter sleeps are linked up and people sleep through, preferably without waking up in between.

We fall asleep under the influence of vapours that ascend from our stomach.

3. Sleeping habits

SLEEP WELL

SLEEP WELL

In the Western world, we indeed mostly sleep a sleep that consists of 5 stages that are in turn divided in different phases. When studying sleep behavior outside the European continent and during many study tours, I found that many population groups still have quite different sleeping habits.

The distinctive feature of their sleep behavior is that population groups that still live very close to nature, do not sleep “through” the night, but actively interrupt their sleep. It was also found that the climate is as important as darkness when it comes to explaining the widespread “afternoon nap”. Even in China, most factories and offices are closed down at noon. In Japan, it is still very popular to have a nap behind your desk at noon. At 5 o’clock in the morning, Bombay already shimmers with activity and the inhabitants of Abidjan only get the hang of things at 11 o’clock in the evening.

4. Where you sleep

Not everyone sleeps out his sleeping needs in the same way; frequent shorter sleeps on the ground, a couch, a seat or a bed spread over the entire day are more common than our modern social sleep in a neatly made-up bed from 11 o’clock in the evening till 7 o’clock in the morning. In the Western world, we evolved from sleepers in a nest or cave to more protected rooms or turret rooms, where people and families sat around a fire and looked for the warmth and protection of one another. They slept on beds that protected them against moisture, cold and vermin. These beds mainly consisted of skins, bags filled with all kinds of elastic materials and blankets that were even spread out over the chest with the most precious belongings.
The Greeks and Romans lived and ate on their beds. In the Middle Ages, the most combative slept sitting in full battle regalia to be able to swing into action while naked men, women and children cozily dived in a bed under the skins. Victorian prudery and new ideas on hygiene brought nightclothes, nightcaps, individual bedrooms and beds. French kings received their subjects while half-sitting/half-lying in their beds.

5. How you sleep

Today, 70% of the people still sleep together with someone else and some hundred years ago the Western world adopted the habit of sleeping in individual bedrooms where parents and children can retire.

Since the invention of the metal spring mattress and the bed box, we sleep completely horizontally and the hassock-pillows have gradually made way for modern more or less hygienically sound beds.

6. Women sleep on their sides, men sleep on their fronts or sides

SLEEP WELL

SLEEP WELL

A survey conducted in 1996 amongst 2,000 of my customers showed that 78% of the women are slide sleepers, while 72% of the men are side/belly sleepers. That’s only logical as in earlier days, most women were constantly pregnant and therefore had not many options left. In addition, by lying on their sides, women were able to better protect the fetus.

In fact, men are better protected by their backs and they can get up much more rapidly from the side/belly position. Other studies reveal that 15% sleep on their backs, 24% on their left sides, 47% on their right sides and 14% on their bellies.

But when we lie down, we often lie on our backs. This change is not only caused by mattresses that are much too hard and thus disturb our sleep profile, but also results from the introduction of electrically sit adjustable bed bases that brought King Television even into the bedroom. We now have light, digitalized communication, a worldwide information network… at our disposal 24 hours a day. And at night too, we permanently have access to all kinds of amusement and recreation… even in our bedroom.

The king sleeps on his back, the sage on his side and the rich man on his belly.
7. Sleep debt

We work and travel at night and yet feel that we so build up some kind of sleep debt. Perhaps we indeed can function 24 hours a day without losing much time to sleeping. When comparing the technological changes over the last century to our overall evolution, they took place in a symbolic second, while our body took 30,000 years to evolve from the homo sapiens into modern man.

Since the light bulb was invented in 1936, we technically can handle night work, our lives can become more and more hectic and we can even gather information or find entertainment in the middle of the night.

8. The great lack of sleep

But, how flexible is our sleep need? Do we really just waste one third of our lives? The more I learn about sleeping, the more I realize that the problems we face today are rather due to a sleep deficiency than to a waste of time through sleeping. For one thing bad-sleeping is the worst ailment of our times, and for another thing modern, technological society and higher life expectancy just require that we, even more than in the past, optimally utilize our sleep.

In sleep labs all over the world, sleep debt was created under lab conditions and the behavior of test subjects was studied. Each study shows that even the slightest sleep deficiency has us function less efficiently. For that matter, short naps in the daytime resulting from this sleep deficiency actually are the biggest cause of accidents, both at work and on the road.

So, what is it that makes sleep so important? That is what you should know!
